BJF Group’s Construction and M&E divisions have together completed a 30-week refurbishment project at the Junior Ranks Mess & Artillery Stores at Sir John Moore Barracks, Folkestone, Kent for Amey on behalf of the MoD. The Barracks is occupied by the Royal Gurkha Rifles, a highly regarded regiment of the British Army.

The project involved the removal of the existing large-scale heating, cooling and ventilation fixtures, fittings and equipment along with associated electrical systems, fire alarm, fire Suppression System and Building Management System followed by the removal of 3,000m2 of roof covering, insulation and structural screed.

Once back to shell, the new works entailed placing a new structural screed to the existing reinforced concrete roof followed by an intricately designed layer of cut to falls insulation finished in a triple ply Langley roof covering system along with new aluminium flashing details and soffits and fascias throughout.

We installed 6 new large Air Handling Units interconnected with circa 350+ meters of new Intake/Extract Ductwork prepared, finished and lagged to withstand the coastal environment in Folkestone to prevent degradation and ensure longevity of the equipment.

To ensure the new services installation operated safely, efficiently and economically a fully bespoke new Building Management System was designed and installed together with brand new safety features throughout. This included a Fire Alarm System, a Fire Suppression System and new lightning protection to all buildings all linked with a new Electrical Services installation.

The kitchen and canteen remained entirely live throughout the full duration of the works. This was achieved through robust SHEQ measures, segregation systems and fall arrest systems to all areas as well as the installation of a fully operational temporary kitchen set up adjacent to the main building, all of which ensured that over 200 Troops could maintain the use of their Mess during the works.
